The TestDaF exam is one of the most popular international German language exams. Its concept was developed based on an idea from the Ministry of Culture, with support from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Education and Research. The goal was to create a central standardized exam for university applicants. Therefore, the target group of the TestDaF includes graduates of foreign schools and universities who wish to begin or continue their studies at higher education institutions in Germany.
The first paper-based exam was introduced in 2001, and twenty years later, the digital format of the exam was launched.
Exam Registration
Currently, candidates can choose the exam format when registering. It is important to note that the digital exam is held more frequently and the results are processed more quickly than those of the paper version.
During registration, attention must be paid to the indication of either the paper-based or digital version. The paper version also includes a serial number.
Exam Duration
The total duration of both exam formats is roughly the same – around 3.5 to 4 hours. However, candidates should take into account breaks and slight differences in exam organization in different countries. What is the same for both formats is that the exam takes place on a single day, and the oral part, regardless of the format, is completed as a monologue recorded in front of a computer screen. There is no live dialogue with a partner or examiner. Candidates should be prepared for this and understand that other test takers will also be speaking nearby, which can be distracting.
The paper-based format requires writing a long, coherent text by hand. This text must be clearly legible. There is little time for drafting, so candidates should be aware that they need to write neatly if they choose the paper-based format.
Exam Results
The results of both formats are usually available on the day indicated as the beginning of the results period (the "Ergebnis" column on the registration website ). Both exam types provide a digital certificate. This means that educational institutions can independently verify the result and the existence of the certificate.
In any format, thorough preparation is crucial. The more you practice, the higher your chances of achieving a good result. On our website, you can train in an environment that simulates the real exam. This way, there will be no surprises on exam day.
