TestDaF Scoring Explained: How the TDN Levels Work

Articles DAF

Many learners wonder what exactly a TestDaF certificate represents. In most classical exams like those from the Goethe-Institut, telc, or ÖSD, the CEFR level (A1–C2) is printed clearly on the certificate. You also receive a grade in points (e.g. out of 100) or words (e.g. ausreichend = “sufficient”, befriedigend = “satisfactory”). However, the grade itself does not affect the certified level – the certificate confirms a fixed level regardless of the score.

With TestDaF, it’s different: the score itself determines which level the certificate confirms. This makes TestDaF a unique international exam. Even if you don’t reach C1, you can still earn a certificate at B2 level instead of getting no result at all. That’s why I often recommend TestDaF over other C1 exams. You can also read more about these differences in my article “Comparison of Advanced-Level Exams”.

TestDaF Digital Scoring System

The TestDaF digital certificate shows the score for each of the four exam sections (Reading, Listening, Writing, Speaking). Each score corresponds to a TDN level:

  • 0–4 points – TDN U3
  • 5–9 points – TDN 3
  • 10–15 points – TDN 4
  • 16–20 points – TDN 5

TDN stands for TestDaF Level. If you score below TDN 3 (TDN U3) in even one section, the entire exam is considered failed – even if the other sections are excellent. Also note that the TestDaF digital exam is not modular: when repeating it, you must retake all four sections.

Correspondence with CEFR Levels

The CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) is the standard used across Europe to describe language proficiency.

  • TDN 3 – Level B2.1
  • TDN 4 – Level B2.2 to C1.1
  • TDN 5 – Level C1.2

Academic Readiness Indicator

TestDaF digital is often used as proof of eligibility for academic activities (studying, Master's programs, research work, etc.). That’s why CEFR levels are not shown on the certificate – only TDN scores. However, all German institutions are very familiar with the system.

Scoring TDN 4 or TDN 5 in all sections guarantees unrestricted university access. Some universities also accept TDN 3 or allow total point-based admission, e.g. 15 points overall (one “3” allowed), or 16 points (a “5” compensating for a “3”).

Advantages of the TestDaF Scoring System

  • Possibility of receiving a certificate even if C1 level is not reached – unlike other exams that fail you completely.
  • Score combinations allow flexibility in choosing universities that accept lower results.
  • TestDaF assesses not just “theory”, but real academic readiness, with a strong focus on practical language skills. See the Can Do Statements on the official TestDaF website.

Conclusion

TestDaF is more than a language exam – it’s a reliable indicator of academic readiness. Its flexible scoring allows you to earn a certificate even if you don’t fully reach C1, opening the door to study in Germany. For anyone planning a serious academic or research path, TestDaF is the most trustworthy choice.
