Who Can Apply to a University in Germany

To study at a German university, you must prove your so-called Hochschulreife — academic eligibility for higher education. In Germany, students attend school for 12–13 years, so international applicants must also demonstrate at least 12 years of school education.

If your country’s secondary education lasts only 11 years, you need to complete an additional year of study — for example, at a university in your home country or at a special preparatory institution called a Studienkolleg in Germany. After completing Studienkolleg, you must pass the Feststellungsprüfung exam, which opens the way to apply to German universities.

Which Language Certificates Are Accepted by German Universities

To apply to a German university, you need a certificate confirming your knowledge of the German language. The most common exams recognized by most universities are:

  • TestDaF (level 4×4 or higher)
  • telc Deutsch C1 Hochschule
  • DSH-2 or DSH-3
  • Goethe-Zertifikat C1 or C2

Most programs require a B2 or C1 level, depending on the faculty. English-taught programs may require IELTS or TOEFL, but even in such cases, basic German knowledge is often needed for everyday life and communication.

Common Mistakes Made by Applicants

Many students make the mistake of thinking that all universities accept the same certificates. In fact, each university has its own requirements, so it’s important to always check the official university website before submitting documents.

Another common mistake is delaying preparation for the language exam. We recommend starting practice early, using mock tests, and working on developing all four skills: Lesen, Hören, Schreiben, and Sprechen.

How to Prepare for Admission

  1. Check whether your high school diploma or degree is recognized in Germany.
  2. If necessary, consider attending a Studienkolleg.
  3. Choose the appropriate language exam — TestDaF, telc, Goethe, or DSH.
  4. Practice regularly before the exam.
  5. Submit your documents via uni-assist.de or directly to the university.

Admission to a university in Germany is an achievable goal for international students. The main things are a clear action plan, systematic preparation, and a realistic study schedule.

Conclusion

It’s possible to obtain higher education in Germany even without intermediaries if you prepare your documents correctly and pass the required language exams. Start by determining your level of German, choose the certificate accepted by your university, and move toward your goal step by step.
